Thanks for the info!! I actually got some good news about that job today. like Davis? Davis wouldn't be a bad drive and people rave about it here on this forum. I think being down near Berkeley isn't such a bad idea for what you want in the way of a social life if you can stand the drive. The commute to the Fairfield area from Napa/Sonoma and from Vallejo is probably one of the most frustrating and dangerous in the north bay.

Some of the most beautiful golden hills are right around Vacaville, and that's a plus in my book. You also mentioned Sonoma and Napa which are, in my opinion, more interesting places but you won't find much to do in the way of nightlife. Vacaville, true to its name, is still kind of a cow town, albeit with new subdivisions and factory outlets. I've known some very cool people from Vallejo (and by the way, they'd often joke about Vallejo being the 'hood or the ghetto). Vallejo is probably on the upswing due to the influx of people from elsewhere in the North Bay, especially Napa, just looking for an affordable place. You'll find those towns dismissed outright by some as "ghetto", and some parts of them are. I'm sure they have nice neighborhoods here and there. Not entirely, but that's sort of their overall feel when you go there to shop or whatever. Of the towns you mentioned, I'd have chosen Vacaville because the others (Vallejo/Fairfield/Suisun) are kinda dumpy places. Hi, I lived in Sonoma and Napa and know some of what you're looking to find out. So that's basically what I need help with! And simply, would you recommend moving there? I have a few other job leads in more desireable locations, but this might be the first to make an offer.

and obviously I can research rental costs online, but I really don't know how to judge the neighborhoods & towns. My sister suggested maybe living in North Berkeley, but I'm afraid that would be a hellish drive! Would commuting from the Napa/Sonoma area be a crazy idea too?Īny input or suggestions about this area would be greatly appreciated! I am a long-time Californian, so I'm already used to the general cost-of-living and traffic issues. but I also don't want to feel isolated at home. I'll probably drive to SF and the Peninsula/South Bay quite often, since my friends & family are there. So, where could I get the most for my money, without living in a crappy neighborhood or having a long commute? I also don't want to be in a "sleepy" town, since I am a 30-year old single woman, who enjoys having a social life.

I won't start until at least 10am, and could work as late as 9 or 10pm. Fairfield, or Suisun City, Vacaville, and other nearby towns? I can't tolerate a long commute, but luckily my work hours aren't really traditional. I have a dog, so my rental choices are fairly limited, and I'd like to stay under $1300/mo. I did a rental search on craigslist, and the prices didn't seem that great in Fairfield itself - Vallejo had more options, and I could probably get something nicer there. So that's basically my overall impression so far! But on the upside, I think it's a rather pretty area, great central location, a bit colder than the Peninsula (which I consider good), and slightly cheaper too. And their official slogan is "County Seat of Solano County", which also suggests that Fairfield doesn't have much to offer. I was a bit worried, though, when I read a slogan that said "Gateway to Great Things"! That's always a bad sign to me, when the biggest attractions are other cities nearby. nothing too exciting, but it appeared to have the basic necessities available. My first time actually stopping in Fairfield was for the interview last week, and it seemed like an okay area.

I've lived in the Bay Area for most of my life, but the Vallejo region is basically just a pass-through on my way to Reno/Tahoe/Sacramento (at least for me - no offense!). so now I'm thinking about that area, since I really don't know much about it. I have a possible job opportunity in Fairfield, working for the county library system. Moderators, feel free to delete my original thread!

I put it on the San Francisco forum, but now realize it might be better here.
